Promotional effect of H2 on the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with propene over a metal-monolithic anodic alumina supported Ag catalyst

The effect of H2 on the selective reduction of Nox with propene over a novel metal-monolithic anodic alumina supported Ag catalyst (Ag/Al2O3/Al) was investigated under lean-exhaust conditions. The de-Nox activity in the low temperature region (< 673 K) was markedly increased by adding a small amount of H2. Since Nox was reduced little by H2 in the absence of propene, H2 should act as a promoter of Nox reduction with hydrocarbons. Upon the removal of H2 from reaction gases, NO reduction activity decreased to the same conversion before the addition of H2, indicating that the promotion effect of H2 on NO reduction activity was reversible. Adding H2 in the feed stream promoted the decomposition of ads-Nox (nitrate species) in the low temperature region to free part of silver sites. The possible reason for the promotional effect by H2 on the C3H6-SCR of NO was associated with the formation of Agn δ + (2 ≤n ≤4) cluster, which had the higher ability of C3H6 partial oxidation than Ag + ions and higher selectivity than to Agm (3 ≤m ≤5) clusters and Ag metal.
