Equilibria for Adsorption of Phosphates in OH-Type Strongly Basic Ion Exchanger -Effect of Coexisting Ion -

The effect of the coexisting ion on equilibrium isotherms for adsorption of phosphates on an OH-type strongly basic ion exchanger, DIAION SA10A were studied experimentally in binary system of phosphates ions and chloride ions. The ion-exchange reaction models were then proposed. By applying the mass action law to the dissociation reactions of the adsorbates in the liquid phase and ion-exchange reactions, the theoretical equations for the adsorption isotherms were derived and the unknown equilibrium constants were determined. Experimental data were correlated well by proposed theoretical models and its behavior was affected by initial concentration of species. Selectivity of phosphates ions is lower than that of chloride ions and it is higher, as mole ratio of chloride ions is lower.
