Development of a New Recycling Process of Shell Wastes with Carbonic Acid Treatment

A new recycling process of shell wastes utilizing high-pressure (~ 3.0 Mpa) carbon dioxide (CO2) solution has been proposed. The proposed process mainly consists of a high-pressure CO2 solution treatment on shell part and a methane fermentation treatment of flesh part. Shell dissolution occurs by a carbonic acid treatment on shell wastes and result in separation of flesh parts from shells. The dissolved calcium can be recovered in the form of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) by reducing the CO2 pressure. Laboratory-scale experiments for thedissolution of process feasibility for the proposed process. As a result, it was confirmed that shell was dissolved in high-pressurecarbonic acid and high pressure CO2 exposure to the flesh has no unfavorable effect on the capacity of methane fermentation. Based on the experimental results, process design of the seashell treatment was conducted, and the cost was estimated. According to the process calculation, proposed new recycling process of shell waste cost about 18,000 ~ 80,000 JPY /t –shell waste (1 JPY = 0.06557 CHY). Therefore it was indicated that the proposed new recycling process of shell waste is economically possible.
