Structure and properties of Silk Fibroin Grafted with Dimethylaminoethyl Methacrylate by ATRP in Water Aqueous
In this study, surface modification of silk fibroin was conducted by grafting dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). FT-IR characterization of the modified silk substrate showed that the DMAEMA had been grafted on the silk surface. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photos of the grafted silk fibroin showed difference with the untreated silk substrate. X-ray diffraction curves demonstrated that the crystalline structure of silk fibroin remained unchanged regardless of the DMAEMA grafting. The GPC results indicated that the graft layer was well- controlled and low-polydispersity polymer was grafted on the silk substrates. The whiteness, the strength and the elongation at break of the grafted silk decreased slightly. The equilibrium moisture regain of the fibroin increased with the DMAEMA grafting.
