European and Global Geopark Networks: Management of Geological Heritage and Local Development

Geoparks are mainly rural territories with outstanding geological and geomorphological heritage, wealthy natural environment and ecosystems, as well as a robust and effective management structure. The European Geoparks Network was born in 2000 by four European territories in order to coordinate their activities, to support and promote each other and to share know-how and experiences. In 2004, UNESCO adopted the initiative as model to be implemented in other continents and established the Global Network of National Geoparks assisted by UNESCO.
