Soft Tourism Principles and Practices for the Sustainable Use of Geoheritages
In a short comparison with ecotourism, the author introduces a seldom used technical term soft tourism. Based on the experience of European professionals, the author presents a clear definition and basic principles by which the tourism industry can find a rationale for practice. The theoretical philosophy is applied into the geopark operations in China and Europe. Visitor education and soft mobility are dwelt upon within the framework of geopark development. Meanwhile, park agencies, local residents and professional park planners are selected as the most influential stakeholders who directly contribute their input to the construction of soft tourism in geoparks. Finally the author anticipates a desirable situation which soft tourism might bring to the future of sustainability for geoparks in China and other parts of the world.
