RESEARCH AND APPLICATION OF THE ULTIMATE LOAD FOR PLANAR STEEL FRAMES IN SAP2000

Through the definition of dependent equations between moment-curvature of plastic hinge and beam-column in SAP2000, and the designation of distribution for plastic hinge, this paper performs a research on the ultimate load analysis for planar steel frame structures. In contrast to the benchmark planar steel frames, the method is reliable, and meanwhile, the applicability of results is investigated; the discrepancy of results is analyzed. The comparison with the default plastic hinge in SAP2000 illustrates that the method using default hinge cannot effectively obtain the ultimate load of steel structures. This paper offers references for the analysis of ultimate load for planar steel structures conveniently by the use of the common finite element analysis software.
