COAL PILLAR & STIFF ROOF SYSTEM INSTABILITY

Based on the Winklers hypothesis, the stiff roof is assumed as an elastic plate (It is totally different with the conventional idea that the stiff roof is assumed as an elastic beam) and the coal pillars are equaled to uniformly distributed nonlinear soft springs, then the coal pillar and the stiff roof interaction system is created. At the same time, the coal pillar is assumed to be a strain-softening medium which can be described by the approximate Weibulls distribution. Using the Plate Mechanics and Catastrophe Theory, the mathematical and mechanical instability criterion of the coal pillar and stiff roof interaction system is given. Then an analysis is done on the Majiliang coal mine, the conclusions show that a good agreement exists between the calculated results and the measured ones. Consequently, it will be useful for the further research of the coal pillar and stiff roof interaction system and the constitution of relevant codes.
