COMPARISON BETWEEN THE BEHAVIOURS OF REINFORCED CONCRETE FILLED CIRCULAR AND SQUARE STEEL TUBULAR SHORT COLUMNS
Concrete filled steel tubular structures (CFT) are widely used in civil engineering works because of its excellent mechanical performances (high strength, deformation, toughness and so on). If the combination of the steel tube and concrete is promoted, the performances will increase by leaps. The authors have studied Reinforced Concrete Filled steel Tubular (RCFT) that is filled Reinforced Concrete (RC) into a steel tube, to get better performances. Axial compressive experimental results on 30 pieces of circular and square hollow steel tube, CFT (concrete filled steel tube) and RCFT (reinforced concrete filled steel tube) columns specimens are described. Effect of different cross-section upon mechanical performance such as bearing capacity, deformation behaviour, and confined effect of CFT/RCFT columns is analysed. As a result, circular CFT/RCFT columns have more excellent bearing capacity, deformation behaviour than square CFF/RCFT columns.
