THE RESEARCH ON TIMBER GRIDS STRENGTHENED WITH A SYSTEM OF INTERSECTING STEEL TIES

This paper describes the methods and results of the research timber grids and spatial structures created as a result of resting the grids on intersecting steel ties. It presents the research on the simplest grid consisting of two intersecting beams ( grid no 1) loaded with two forces applied to one of the beams at 1/3l spaces. The research was done in two phases: elastic and destructive. Grid No. 2 with analogical construction was examined only in the elastic area but under two kinds (schemate) of loading: two forces, as previously mentioned, applied to one of the beams and four forces applied to each of the intersecting beams (2 to each). It was observed that the load capacity of the grid was about 29% higher while loading it with four forces. Next, the steel ties supporting the grid in both directions were fixed by means of a post placed in the point of intersection. It was observed that the load capacity of the grid strengthened with the ties was about than 3 times higher than without strengthening.
