RECENT PROGRESS IN THE STUDY OF LONG PERIOD STRONG MOTION IN JAPAN
Because the structures with long dominant period, such as the high-rise buildings, the long-span bridges, and the large-scale oil tanks, are increased rapidly in China, Japan and the world, it becomes more important to study the characteristics of the strong ground motion at long periods. In this paper, we give a brief introduction to some topics in the study of long-period strong motion in Japan, including the damages due to the long period strong motion during large earthquakes occurred in Japan, the national-wide observation facilities, and the advances in simulation technique of the long period ground motion, in terms of the semi-empirical methods and the theoretical approaches.
