WATERFRONT ENVIRONMENT IMPROVEMENT USING PRECAST POROUS CONCRETE UNITS

This paper summarizes the experimental results of improving the ecosystems of test water channel near Lake Biwa by placing precast porous concrete products in the channel. A fundamental experiment to treat artificial wastewater quality by porous concrete was conducted in the laboratory. Two different sizes of coarse aggregate of 5~10, 10 ~ 15 were used. How did aggregate size of porous concrete influence wastewater quality was measured. To verify the effect of porous concrete on the improvement of the waterfront environment, especially on the diversification of ecosystems and the quality of water, precast porous concrete products were placed in a water channel of 2m (width)×24m (length). The products in the diameter of 250mm were assembled in a series of units with different shapes and placed in the water channel to form three experimental zones. Living spaces of creatures in the water channel varied from millimetres to meters were formed. The environment of ecosystems and water quality in the water channel were investigated. Results obtained from the experimental water channel were com-pared with result of a blank water channel. Information for the conservation of waterfront eco-system and the purification of water quality by using porous concrete product is provided in the paper.
