ANALYSIS ON STRAIN TRANSFER OF FIBER OPTIC FABRY-PEROT SENSORS
Fiber optic Fabry-Perot sensor is often used in the large scale structure health monitoring. Epoxy is usually used when fixing the fiber optic sensing element onto the sensor shell. The strain transfer of the surface mounted fiber optic Fabry-Perot sensor is analyzed in this paper. Based on the theory of elasticity, the strain transfer rate from the substrate to the fiber optic Fabry-Perot cavity is evaluated theoretically. The results show that the gauge length of the Fabry-Perot cavity has significant effect on the sensitivity of the sensor. Also the characteristics of the epoxy used in the sensor will have some effect oh the sensitivity. Some experiments are carried out to test the performance of the sensor. The result has good agreement with the theoretical analysis.
