In situ AFM of dissolution processes in zeolitic materials

Atomic force microscopy has been used to measure detailed dissolution processes in zeolite A. The zeolite dissolves by a very well defined multi-step process. This is characterised by correlated dissolution observed as terrace retreat when building units are inter-connected and uncorrelated dissolution of unconnected units. The stabilisation of nanoslabs of zeolitic is also observed in the final stages of terrace removal.
