Adsorption of amino acids on SBA-15-type mesoporous materials
The adsorption of amino acids such as alanine (Ala), arginine (Arg), phenylalanine (Phe), leucine (Leu) was carried out on a series of SBA-15-type mesoporous materials, namely SBA-15, CH3 (10%)-SBA-15 and CH3 (20%)-SBA-15. The extent of Arg adsorption was observed to strongly depend on the aqueous pH and the surface charge of adsorbents. In contrast, Phe adsorption showed the pH insensitivity and was related closely to the degree of organic functionalization of adsorbent. Such a remarkable difference originated from the different types of dominant interactions between amino acids and adsorbents. The adsorption of Arg (basic amino acid) was mainly driven by the electrostatic interaction. However, the driving force for adsorption of Phe (neutral amino acid) attributed to the strong hydrophobic interaction between Phe and SBA-15, especially methyl functionalized SBA-15.
