Amine grafted pore-expanded MCM-41 as base catalysts
Pore-expanded MCM-41 silica (PE-MCM-41), which in addition to high surface area(>1000 m2/g) combines large pores (up to 25 nm) and pore volume (up to 3.5 cm3/g) was used to immobilize various amine groups of different basic strengths. These amine-grafted materials showed high activity as base catalysts for Knoevenagel condensation between aldehydes or ketones and ethylcyanoacetate (ECA). The PE-MCM-41 silica grafted with primary amine in dry toluene showed the highest activity per amine group, followed in order by primary-secondary (diamine), secondary and tertiary amine.
