Synthesis and catalytic properties of sulfonic acid-functionalized periodic mesoporous organosilicas

Two types of sulfonic acid functionalized mesoporous materials ASMES (arene sulfonic acid ethane-silica) and ASSBA-15 (arene sulfonic acid SBA-15), were synthesized in one step and characterized using XRD, BET, TEM and 13C MAS NMR. Liquid phase acetalization of heptanal by 1-butanol was performed at four different temperatures to study the catalytic properties of these hybrid organic-inorganic mesoporous solids. HY zeolite and Amberlyst-15 were used as solid acid catalysts for comparison. The results revealed that arene sulfonic acid mesoporous organosilicas exhibit a good catalytic activity. High acetal yield and selectivity are associated with their high hydrophobicity or/and large pores. A deactivation of these catalysts was also observed and discussed in relation with thermodynamic equilibrium limitation.
