Preparation of MSU-H/anodic alumina-composite membranes

Based on the preparation procedure of mesoporous silica MSU-H, the addition method and the amount of acetic acid were optimized to allow the mesoporous silica to form in the channels of anodic alumina substrates. Two approaches were attempted, namely treatment of acetic acid-free silicate precursors with acetic acid vapor and steaming of acetic acidcontaining silicate precursors. Although the former approach resulted in inclusion of silica component within the substrate channels, almost no mesoporous silica component was formed. The latter approach led to a successful formation of mesoporous silica composite membranes by optimizing the precursor sol preparation and the occluded surfactant was successfully removed by solvent extraction.
