A High Resolution Beamforming Method Based on Wigner-Ville Distribution
In a process of developing a sonar which will be equipped on various underwater vehicles, the size of the array is an important factor to be considered. In order to obtain better resolution with relatively small size array, we must study new methods for beamforming. In this paper, we discuss the beamforming algorithm by Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD). First, the algorithm of WVD beamforming is derived in theory. Then the traditional DFT and WVD algorithms have been compared by computer simulations. Further more, the method for decreasing the level of side-lobe has been studied. The results show that a better spatial resolution can be obtained by WVD beamforming, and the level of the side-lobe can be controlled effectively.
