Comparison of Magnitude Detection Methods of Echo Time Delay in Swath Bathymeter System

The purposes of swath bathymeter signal processing are extracting echoes from points used to measure depth in bottom reverberation signal and estimating parameters. Detector designed according to echo characters is adopted. Front-edge detection method of magnitude detector is generally adopted in bathymeter system based on the assumption that sheer front-edge exists in echo signal. Four magnitude detection methods generally used in swath bathymeter system are argued in this paper. The processing procedures, applying conditions and characters of above methods are discussed in detail in this paper. It can be concluded that fine estimation of TOA of echo signals in specular regime can be got by using magnitude detection method and fine estimation of DOA of echo signals in non specular regime can be got by using phase detection method.
