A General Method to Design Phased Array for Phased-Array Doppler Log

To measure 2-D velocity of a vehicle relative to the ground, 3 or 4 piston monostatic transducers are used to form 3 or 4 independent beams in the conventional Doppler log. The compensation for sound velocity is generally involved in this kind of devices so as to get a high enough precision of measured velocity. Furthermore, when a greater depth for tracking the bottom is required and the higher working frequency has to be used, the size of the array will rapidly increase and cause difficulties to mount. In the phased-array Doppler log, a plane phased array with multi elements are employed to form 4 required beams and no compensation for sound velocity is needed. As a result, the size of the array is decreased and hence this type of Doppler log has got more application in recent times. From array theory, the basic ideal to design the phased-array for this kind of Doppler log is proposed in this paper. By using the concept of combination array, the method of synthesizing directivity for an equal spaced linear array is analyzed at first. Then, based on the ideal, a scheme to realize transmitting and receiving using a monostatic array is given. A test system including a plane array with multi elements and some hardware has been built. The directivities of the designed array are given as well in this paper.
