The Echo Characteristics of the Bottom Targets

Based on the modified Kirchhoff approximation for a bosom target and the planar element method, the echo characteristics of a bottom target are calculated and analyzed. The target strengths of the bottom target on the silt and clay sediments are compared with those in free space. The influences of various parameters, including the transmitting-receiving beam、 the bottom types、 the azimuth and grazing angles, to the target strength and the echo-to- reverberation ratio are discussed. The method developed in this paper can predict the target strength and echo-to-reverberation ratio of a bottom target with an arbitrary shape.
