Graphics and Spatial Synthesis Ability of Students of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering
The evaluation of the ability of students to recognize graphics spatial information is necessary for properly creating drafting and designing courses for mechanical engineering. This paper discusses a method using a simple three-dimensional figure consisting of unit cubes. In this test, a set of orthogonal views of the shape are shown and then the students select the proper isometric drawing of the shape from three alternatives. The test was conducted on a group of 133 third and fourth-year students in the department of electronics and mechanical engineering of Osaka Electro-Communication University in 2006. A new series of 20 problems was used for the evaluation. The students also answer a questionnaire in which the students evaluate their own abilities.
