Study on Halogenated Flame Retardants Waste Disposal in WEEE

Electronic and information technology, dramatically emerged during the last decades, has generated environmental problems by accelerating mass production, mass consumption, and mass disposal of electronic and electric equipments (EEE) in the whole world. Some parts and components of these EEE contain many kinds of Halogenated Flame Retardants (HFRs), such as Deca-BDE and Octa-BDE, which lead to serious impact on the eco-environment and human health in final recycling and disposal, especially in incineration. In addition, some HFRs as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) had been found in biota and the level seem to be increasing rapidly. In this point, we need to study these HFRs, in order to find a reliable way to solve these problems safety. In this paper, current situation and development for HFRs used in EEE was analyzed. And some domestic and foreign policies and standards involved in HFRs controlling in EEE were introduced as well. In addition, the article gave an analysis on the groups of compounds, chemical, physical and toxic characteristics of HFRs in waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). Finally, relevant technology, which was special for disposing mixed waste contained HFRs from PCBs recycling and disposal, was described and compared.
