Microbial recovery of metals from waste electrical and electronic equipment

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) usually contains a quantity of valuable metals and it is actually a secondary resource of metals. Recovery of metals from the WEEE and utilization of the WEEE are important not only for saving metal resources, but also for protecting the environment. Even though there are conventional disposal methods for WEEE, these methods have disadvantages from both the economic and environmental viewpoints. As a result, new WEEE management options need to be considered, such as bioleaching. Compared to the traditional processes, bioleaching process has a bright prospect in industry with the characters of economic, environmental friendly. Bioleaching processes are based on the ability of microorganisms (such as bacteria and fungi) to transform solid compounds resulting in soluble and extractable elements which can be recovered. The new technique of biohydrometallurgy will bring novel opportunities and challenges to recovery of the valuable metals from WEEE. This paper summarized the characteristics of WEEE, and reviewed the mechanisms, research and application, existing problems and developing tendencies related to bacterial leaching of WEEE.
