Bioleaching of heavy metals from civil Sludge by Indigenous Thiobaciilus ferrooxidans

The civil sludge taken from Qilidian sewage treatment plant in Guilin was used as the cultivation medium and ferrous sulfate (FeSO<,4>.7H<,2>O) for the growth and multiplication of bioleaching microorganisms was selected as substrate in this study. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans(T. f) was dominant species in this process. Overall bioleaching procedure included two stages: acidophilus domestication and inoculated cultivation. The first stage research indicated that using fresh sludge as cultivation medium was feasible for acidophilus domestication and the essential substrate dosage was about 10g/L (m/V). The succeeding process of bioleaching was conducted in a simplified sequence bath reactor (SBR) which included three steps within one treatment period, inflow→aeration→discharge. The removal rates of high concentration heavy metals such as copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) could reach 78.3%, 77.7% and nearly 99% after 2 days running of SBR when the discharge ratio and aeration rate were controlled to 1/1.3 (about 30% inoculum volume) and 1.5L/min respectively. Residual contents of the three elements were lower than the limit standard for sludge land application in China.
