Fuel Ethanol Production from Kitchen garbage by Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation Process using Zymomonas mobilis
Kitchen garbage is easily to be deteriorated and would give out bad odor during the collection and transportation process since it contained a large quantity of moisture and organic substances. In order to find an ideal way to utilize the kitchen garbage, simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) was chosen to produce ethanol from it. Zymomonas mobilis was adopted instead of traditional yeast due to its high ethanol yield and tolerance to higher ethanol concentration. The crucial factors during the fermentation and the corresponding optimum conditions were determined in this study. They were ratio between solid and liquid of 1:0.5, pH of 5, inoculum size of 10%, temperature of 30℃, fermentation time of 32h, corresponding optimum ethanol was 56g/l. Through this method the kitchen garbage could be utilized as the good resource to save the cost of ethanol production.
