Landfill Leachate Treatment by Disc-Tube Reverse Osmosis System: a case study

Reverse osmosis system with disc-tube module (DT-RO) was applied to treat landfill leachate on full scale at Changshengqiao Sanitary Landfill, Chongqing Municipality. In the first six-mouth operation, the performance of DT-RO system was high and stable. The removal of CODcr, TOC and electrical conductivity (EC) reached 99.2-99.7%, 99.2% and 99.6% respectively; the removal of NH<,3>-N over 98%. The rejection of Ca<2+>, Ba<2+> and Mg<2+> was over 99.9% respectively. SS was not detected in product water. Effective methods were adopted to control membrane fouling, of which chemical cleaning is of utmost importance to guarantee DT-RO system operating smoothly and lifetime. The DT-RO system is cleaned with Cleaner A and Cleaner C in turn. At present, the cleaning cycle of lst stage by Cleaner A and Cleaner C is conducted every 100 hours and 500 hours, respectively, depending on raw water quality. According to operating cost during first six mouths, it is calculated, the operating cost is 16.26 Yuan RMB per leachate treatment, total cost is 21.47 Yuan RMB including equipment depreciation.
