Study on Dyeable Polypropylene (PP) Fibers Modified by Polystyrene (PS)/Garamite
PS/Garamite particles were synthesized via in-situ suspension polymerization and blends of polypropylene (PP) and PS/Garamite were prepared. The similar d- spacing values of Garamite determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) in the matrix showed that there was no secondary reunite of Garamite during the processing. PP/PS/Garamite filaments were melt-spun from the blends. The crystal morphology of PP/PS/Garamite blends observed with a polarized light microscopy (PLM) and the thermal analysis of the fibers carried out with a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) instrument showed that the size of the crystal in the PP/PS/Garamite blends was smaller than that in PP. The crystallinity of PP/PS/Garamite fiber decreased with the addition of the additive and more amorphous area had formed. The dyeability of the blend fibers was studied. The interface between PP and modified PS allowed the dyes to penetrate the fibers and the primary component of Garamite, bentonite provided dyesites. These two effects helped to increae the final color intensity.
