The Spin Pack Design for Fabricating Segmented Cladding Fiber by Bicomponent Spinning
A segmented-cladding fiber (SCF) is one of new type optical fibers, which consists of a uniform core with high refractive index material and a cladding region with angularly alternating high and low refractive index materials. It provides an effective approach for achieving widely extended single-mode operation with a large core size. Although it was fabricated with polymer casting technique by Yeung et al., it was hard to obtain the long enough and perfect pattern fiber. Here, we proposed a bicomponent spinning process to fabricate this type of fiber. The high and low index materials were supplied in two individual screws and then combined and extruded through the new designed spin pack. By optimization of spin pack structure and experimental parameters, several problems, such as the core is too small, were successfully solved. The continuous and even SCF was obtained by bicomponent spinning process.
