Reactive Modification of Interfaces in Blends with Polypyrrole and Polysiloxanes

Polyfunctional coupling agents (PCA) containing three different functionalities have been developed based on SiH-containing polysiloxanes (SCA) and on polypyrrole (PPy). Two functional groups of these PCA were used to compatibilize pairs of the reactive polymers during melt mixing, while the third functionality is used to introduce special properties to the interfaces in the immiscible blends. In case of SCA we expect control over diffusibility, in case of PPy the goal is to introduce antistatic properties to the blend with low amounts of modifier. It is shown, that the PCA locate at least partially at the polymer-polymer interface and that co-continuous morphologies can be obtained. Both findings are prerequisites for the formation of continuous paths of the PCA along the interface in the blend, which is a necessary condition to reach our goal.
