Synthesis of Co-oligomer of Maleic Acid and Methylacrylate and its Application in DP Finishing of Cotton Fabrics

Co-oligomers containg maleic acid and methylacrylate segments (COMM) was synthesized with a series of composition by using hydrogen peroxide as the initiator. The reaction conditions, such as the monomer ratio and reaction time were investigated in detail. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer was employed to characterize the molecular structure of COMM. The resultant water soluble oligomers could be used as a kind of non-formaldehyde durable press finishing agent with respect to cotton fabrics. And the flexible molecular chains were favorable for the wrinkle recovery of cotton fabrics. Synthesis conditions of COMM, together with the durable press finishing conditions of COMM were optimized in this research. The results of the finished cotton fabrics showed that the optimized wrinkle recovery was about 250°, with the weft strength lost about 40%. Therefore, the finishing effects of COMM were superior to those of modified 2D resin, which is currently regarded as the best durable press finishing agent of coton fabrics.
