Studies upon the structure and properties oflong-staple cotton fiber under microwave radiation
With an attempt to set a theoretical basis for the application of microwave radiation treatment (MRT) in cellulose industries, the effects of MRT on the physical/mechanical properties, microstructure, crystal structure of long-staple cotton fibers (LSCF) were tested and investigated through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Inflared spectrum (IR), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and so on. Under different MRT parameters, the percentage of weight loss and mechanical properties of LSCF were tested. The curve fitting equations of the percentage of weight loss were obtained. The experimental results indicate the percentage of weight loss increases with increasing the power and time of MRT. As a general trend, treatment up with microwave reduces strength and improves breaking extension of LSCF. But the strengths of some samples under given MRT conditions are higher than before. Moreover, MRT alters the morphology of LSCF and makes the surface of LSCF rougher. The crystalinity and crystal size decrease but the degree of orientation and moisture absorption index improve.
