Evaluation of Bamboo Strips/unsaturated Polyester Resin Interfacial Adhesion using the Pull-out Test
Interfacial adhesion between bamboo strips and unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) has been investigated by the pull-out test. Bamboo strips were treated with an alkali solution of 20% concentration for different periods of time. The parameter interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was calculated by the maximum force measured from the pull-out test and surface area of bamboo strips embedded in UPR using the Kelly-Tyson equation. An improvement of IFSS is clearly observed after alkali treatment and the highest IFSS has been obtained in the case of treatment process for 60min. An SEM study indicates alkali treatment leads to more roughness and more cellulosic fibril exposed on the surface of bamboo strips. The curves of pull-out force versus displacement for all specimens are typical brittle fracture and alkali treated bamboo strips show more stable debonding process than untreated.
