Use of Acoustic Emission to Identify Damage Modes in UHMWPE/LDPE Laminates
The purpose of this work is to identify and characterise the various damage modes of UHMWPE/LDPE laminates by acoustic emission (AE) parameters. AE signals of four kinds of specimen (LDPE, UHMWPE bundle, 90, and 0/90) are processed by clustering and discriminance. The test result reveals each type of damage mode has different AE parameters. According to distribution of AE signals, damage mechanism of UHMWPE/LDPE laminates can be described as follows. Early micro-damage with large number and small energy mainly comes from matrix crack and interface cracking. Then, the number of AE signals increases rapidly including little fiber breakage. Finally, main damage with small number but large energy mainly comes from residual fiber fractured together mixing with large number of interface debonding and matrix damage. It is verified that the final macro-damage of UHMWPE/LDPE laminates is caused by accumulative various micro-damages which generate simultaneously.
