Dynamic Mechanical Properties of Polyethylene Fiber Reinforced Polyethylene Composites

The dynamic mechanical properties of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fiber reinforced high- density polyethylene (UHMWPE/HDPE) composites were investigated in three point bending mode over a wide temperature range with a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). The dynamic modulus and damping parameters, used to quantify interfacial interaction in the composites, were investigated. The results show that the storage modulus (E) of the composites increased non-linearly with increasing volume fraction of the fibers (V<,f>). The E value, of the composite with 40% fiber loading was the highest with different volume fraction of the fibers under the same test conditions. The influence of the fiber content on the mechanical damping of UHMWPE/HDPE composites was insignificant. When V<,f> increased from 20 to 50%, the glassy transition temperature of the composites slightly increased, reached maximum at V<,f> =40%, and then decreased.
