The Research on Surface Modification and Heat Treatment of PBO Fiber
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the surface morphologies of poly 1, 4- phenylenecis-benzobisoxazol (PBO) fiber. It was found that there were many flaws and grooves on the surface of un-dried fiber, however, the surface of dried fiber was much smoother. Coupling agent was employed to modify the surface of PBO fiber with different surface morphologies. The results showed that the interfacial shear strength between PBO fiber and epoxy resin were greatly improved after the modification, the efficiency of treatment with un- dried fiber was up to 69.4% of strength increase and was better than that with dried fiber. Homemade PBO fiber was heat-treated and it was found that un-dried fiber had better effect than dried fiber. After heat treatment, fiber tensile modulus had a great improvement, and fiber tensile strength had a moderate increase.
