Influence of High Temperature and Ultraviolet Radiation on Durability and Stability of Aramid Yarns

The thermal resistance and light stability of Kevlar and Nomex filaments as well as their staple blended yams were investigated in three different environmental conditions. One condition was set with 150℃, 200℃, 250℃ and 300℃ for lh, 2h and 3h; the other condition was set with exposure to ultraviolet radiation for 10h, 20h, 30h and 40h.; the last condition was firstly exposed to ultraviolet radiation for 20h, then dealt with 200℃ for 2h. The tensile properties of prepared samples under conditions mentioned above were tested. It is indicated that there are significant relations between the tensile properties retention and temperature, ultraviolet radiation. Temperature above 250℃ caused great decreasing of the tensile properties of all samples, and the breaking strength and elongation decreased with the increasing of the treating time. The combined action with high temperature and ultraviolet radiation easily caused decreasing of tensile strength.
