Characterization of dielectric properties of three-dimensional basalt-Kevlar epoxy hybrid composites using waveguide method

Dielectric characteristics of three-dimensional (3D) basalt-Kevlar/epoxy hybrid composites with the designed interply and intraply structures were investigated in this stud. For comparison, the composites containing only-basalt and only-Kevlar reinforcemets have also been studied. The complex constant of composites was obtained using the waveguide method. The dielectric constant and loss tangent as a function of the frequency in x band of single basalt fiber composites show different behaviors from the other three types of composites. Moreover, the dielectric constant and loss tangent of the intraply composites shows lower values than the interply composites. The values of loss tangent of the hybrid composites are between the two single fiber composites, however, the values of dielectric constant of the hybrid composites are higher than the two single fiber composites. This result does not accord with the mixing rule which was most widely used for predicting the dielectric constant of composites.
