Effects of Sisal Fiber Treatment on Properties of Sisal Fiber/glass Fiber/unsaturated Polyester Resin Composites
Sisal fiber (SF) was pretreated by alkali, steam explosion and grafting reaction. Sisal fiber/glass fiber/unsaturated polyester (SF/GF/UP) hybrid composites were prepared through compression molding. The effects of treatments on the wear resistance, thermal stability and water absorption properties of composites were studied. Tests results indicated that different treatments had a remarkable effect on the properties of SF/GF/UP composites. The composites containing esterified SF which was pretreated by grafting reaction had the best wear resistance property, thermal stability and water absorption property. The wear volume decreased by 71.6%, decomposition temperature (Td) increased by 20℃than the composites with untreated SF. Meanwhile, the composites containing esterified SF showed lower water absorption as compared to the composites with untreated SF. Studies on fiber-matrix interface and fracture behavior of the composite were also made by SEM.
