Preparation and Characterization of Flame Retarded PC/ABS Alloy

Polycarbonate/ABS alloy with flame retardant BDP had been prepared by a co-rotating twin-extruder. The flame retardancy was investigated by cone calorimeter. The results showed that the flame retardant improved the alloys flame retardancy greatly. The thermal stability of the polymer alloy and the flame retarded one was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The activation energies were determined using the Kissinger method and the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method, which did not require knowledge of the reaction mechanism. The results of the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa method showed that the PC/ABS/BDP had a higher thermal stability and lower flame ability than the neat one during the Kissinger method failed. The residue after burning in CONE was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and which of the flame retarded alloy showed a compact porous carbon layer.
