Synthesis and Characterization of Temperature and Glucose Responsive Microgels

The temperature and glucose responsive microgels were synthesized by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization, based on N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and 3-acrylamidophenylboronic acid (AAPBA) as comonomers. The microgels with excellent monodispersity and adjustable composition were obtained. Their particle sizes decreased with the increase of pH value of the reaction media or AAPBA amount used. The microgel particles were found to be both temperature and glucose responsive. Their volume phase transition temperatures were dependent on the content of AAPBA component in the microgels. Their hydrodynamic diameters measured by dynamic laser light scattering increased with the increase of the concentration of glucose from 0 mM to 100 mM in Tris (2 mM) buffer solution at pH 8.5.
