Electromagnetic Shielding Performance of Knitted Fabrics Containing Stainless Steel Fiber

The stainless steel fiber has excellent electric conductivity and magnetic conductivity. Electromagnetic radiation protection fabrics made of stainless steel (SS) fiber attract more and more attentions. In order to study the influence of the stainless steel fiber content and their shape in the knitted fabrics on electromagnetic shielding performance, the blended yarn of stainless stecl staple/cotton and the wrapped yarn of stainless steel filament/acrylic were developed and knitted into eight kinds of fabrics according to different interlacing proportion by weight. Thev were determined using methods of coaxial wave guide. The electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (ESE) of SS staple fiber fabrics were 2.08 dB. 2.32 dB when they contained 7.4% SS staple. However from the results of experiments. it was observed that fabrics containing SS filament had much better ESE and reached 11.67 dB, 12.16 dB though they contained only 7.68%, 7.69% SS filament, respectively. Furthermore, the more stainless steel fiber the fabrics contain, the better their electromagnetic shielding performance is.
