Soluble Functional Polyacetylenes for Laser Protection: Molecular Design, Preparation and Optical Limiting Mechanism

Three series of soluble functional polyacetylens containing azobenzene pendant groups were designed and prepared using Rh(nbd)Cl<,2>-Et<,3>N as catalyst by copolymerization with monomer of soluble polymer, adding flexible spacer or/and terminal alkyloxy group methods. Their structures and properties are characterized and evaluated by IR, NMR, TGA, UV, optical limiting, and nonlinear optical analyses. All the polymers possess large molecular weight and high thermal stability, displays novel optical limiting properties and large third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility up to 1.34×10<-10>esu. The relation between molecular structure and their optical properties were investigated in detail.
