Physical Principles of Super Silk Engineering

Spider silk fibers are of practical interest because of their excellent mechanical property. It is strong and tough that is optimized by nature to fulfill a wide range of functions using subtle changes in chemical composition and, importantly, morphological structure at a nanometer scale. Spider dragline silk is a high-performance fiber with mechanical properties rivaling the best man-made materials, and is often utilized as the materials for making bullet jacket, parachute and other high performance materials etc. We recently applied a special technology to treat silk worms. Surprisingly, it is found that the toughness of worm silk is enhanced by more than 40%, and the critical stretching is enhanced till the level of the fragline of spider silks, without jeopardizing other properties of silk. Compared with the normal silk worm silks, the breaking energy of the super silk has been enhanced for about 200%. This opens us a completely new way to produce super silk at a low cost.
