Study on the Cotton Fiber of Northern Song Dynasty Unearthed from Yuli
The color, length, fineness, and convolution of cotton fiber dating from Northern Song Dynasty (A. D. 960-1127) unearthed from Yuli in Xinjiang were observed, and the longitudinal and cross-sectional morphology were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Compared archaeological cotton fiber with modern cotton fiber, we can see that the unearthed fiber and modern G. herbaceum fiber have some common features. Furthermore, consulted historical literatures and other archaeological discoveries, it can be confirmed that cotton fiber of Northern Song Dynasty belong to G. herbaceum.
