A Rapid Method for Complete Removal of Cuticle from Merino Wool Fibers
A rapid method for complete removal of cuticle layer of Merino wool fibers was studied by chemical and physical treatment. Wool fibers boiled in 88% formic acid for a short time could make the fibers swell much and accelerate the liberation of cuticles, while boiled in highly concentrated formic acid (98%) for a long time of vigorous agitation could result in serious fibrillation and uneven removal of cuticle. In long-time treatment, many longitudinal cracks on the surface of wool fibers occurred during the boiling stage and cuticles were chipped from the breakup point due to the increase of permeation of chemical reagent which caused by a succeeding irradiation process. The results showed it was an effective and rapid method to remove cuticle layer from Merino wool fibers under the following conditions: A 10mins boiling preliminary treatment in 88% formic acid followed by a 10mins ultrasonic irradiation of 400W and then further 20mins irradiation of 200W.
