Effects of Alkali Treatment on the Accessibility of Chitin with Epoxyethane

Etherification is one of the most important modifications to prepare chitin derivatives by reacting alkali chitin with various etherificants. The preparation of alkali chitin involves soaking chitin into an aqueous alkali solution to activate its reacting accessibility. In this article, the effects of alkali treatment on the accessibility of chitin weree valuated by the solid state structural changes of the alkali treated chitin, and by the water solubility of hydroxyethylated chitin prepared with epoxyethane in uniform conditions. The FTIR spectra and X-ray diffraction showed that the hydrogen bonds were destroyed and crystal structure was decrystallized significantly by the alkali treatment. The temperature and concentrations of the NaOH aqueous solution had a co-effect on the accessibility of alkali chitin. When treated at 20℃, the water solubility of the hydroxyethylated chitin increased as NaOH concentration increased, while at 20℃, its water solubility decreased as NaOH concentration increased. Maximum accessibility was obtained by soaking chitin into a 30wt% NaOH solution for 24h at -20℃.
