Continuous nanofiber yarns produced by self-bundling electrospinning method
Electrospinning is known to be a simple and versatile method to fabricate nonwoven two-dimensional nanofibrous mesh. Here, continuous polymer nanofiber yams are manufactured by self-bundling electrospinning method. Compared with typical electrospinning setup, there is nothing special in this method except that a grounded needle tip is used to induce the self-bundling of polymer nanofibers at the beginning of electrospinning process. Aligned nanofiber yams were achieved successfully by using this self-bundling electrospinning method. A possible mechanism for the self-bundling formation of nanofiber yarn is proposed in this manuscript. We believe, aligned fiber materials have many potential applications in areas such as tissue engineering, filtration, drug delivery, and microelectronics.
