Synthesis and Characterization of Poly (methyl methacrylate-methylacrylate)/organo-montmorillonite Nanocomposites by in Situ Emulsion Polymerization
Poly (methyl methacrylate-methylacrylate)/organo- montmorillonite (OMMT) nanocomposites were prepared by in situ emulsion polymerization. Wide-angle-X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the structures of the nanocomposites. The thermal stability was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The mechanism of thermal degradation and the structure of the copolymer was characterized by pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrum (PGC-MS). The result showed that both intercalated and exfoliated structures were found in the nanocomposites. Thermal stability of the nanocomposites increased with the addition of OMMT and reached maximum value when the addition of the OMMT was 5% (weight percent). The addition of the comonomer methacrylate (MA) also had effect on the thermal stability of the nanocomposites. The optimal comonomer ratio of MMA to MA was 2:1 and the resultant nanocomposites had the increase of 25℃ in the thermal stabillty at l0% weight loss.
